With sadness we announce the passing of Harold Shantz on August 14, 2019 at Brantford General Hospital. Son of Jesse Shantz and Susanna Shantz (nee Bauman). Harold is survived by his wife Pamela and son Jesse Slade Shantz and his wife Angelique. He will be missed by sisters Marlene (Dave) and Gladys (Bob) and brothers Lyall (Ruth) and Leroy (Carol). Grandchildren June and Niko will miss Grandpa’s homemade ice cream. Harold was born to Lot 26 G.C.T. and attended Bearinger Schoolhouse and graduated from Rockway Mennonite College in 1957. He was a graduate of Waterloo Lutheran University and University of Toronto School of Hygiene. A lifelong passion for healthcare management was born during mission work at Landour Community Hospital in the foothills of the Himalayas, in India. Harold retired as CEO of Norfolk General Hospital in 2000 after 22 years of healthcare leadership. He will be remembered for his passions for curling, golf, Rotary, gardening, politics and community service. Harold remains an example of tolerance and openness to his friends and family. His openness extended to welcoming countless exchange students and Caribbean ministers to his home for extended stays. Harold will also be remembered by co-workers for his genuine interest in everyone, whether manager or custodial staff. He extended his fair, direct manner to his community service work at St. James United Church, the Rotary Club, Rotary Youth Exchange and Rotary Curling Fellowship as well as Norfolk General Hospital. He was also passionate about curling, playing over 100 games in his 80th year and winning 3 world Rotary curling championships and a provincial stick championship in 2015. Harold leaves a legacy of kindness and tireless public service in his wake. Those who met him will never forget the fairness he brought to every interaction and the measured, compassionate presence he was in all our lives. Sue and I received the very sad news of Harold’s passing. We are so very sorry for your loss. We never really got to know Harold that much over the years but whenever we had opportunity to meet and chat, one always knew there was lots going on behind that face. He clearly will be leaving a big space. Anyone who can curl the way he did and also make home made ice cream for his grand children is rated very high in our books. He leaves many amazing memories for you.
We won’t be with you today at the church but in spirit and prayer our thoughts will be with Harold and your family.
