Garrie Marwood Donald (Don) Swain
It is with much sorrow that the Swain family announces that our Don quietly left us during the evening of August 17 at the age of 78.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his high-school sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Joan McKinley Swain, his daughter and son-in-law Lindsay and Linsey, son Jamie and daughter Jocelyn. His beloved granddaughters, Amira, Nadia, Tysir, Aliya and Cailey were the light of his life. His sister Birdeen (Richard), brother Barry and brother-in-law Gord, will remember him with love as well. He will also be remembered by his cousins, nephews, nieces, friends, the Crazy Canoe guys, the Condon Barr Flies and many food-service industry colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents Marwood and Ollie, his sister Charlotte and his daughter Leslie.
Don was well-known for his extensive knowledge of the commercial kitchen industry and he earned the great respect of his peers for his honesty and integrity. He had a long career of more than 45 years beginning at Russell Food and ending as co-owner of Condon Barr Food Equipment.
Don was a Queen Scout with a great love of the outdoors in which he enjoyed camping, white‑water canoeing, hiking, duck hunting and fishing. He shared his immense joy of the wilderness with his wife, children and his darling granddaughters and we’re so thankful for the wonderful family memories of the many trips we took together. He also enjoyed travelling the world with Joan and their good friends Jeanne and Ken looking for the “new blue highways”.
We will honor Don with a Celebration of his Life to be announced at a later date.
Paddle on you crazy canoe guy. The rapids and white water are behind you and a serene ride down the river awaits.
Godspeed.
As the eclectic music of CKUA Radio was always such a pleasure and enjoyment for Don, if friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the CKUA Radio Foundation in his name.
