We
regret to announce the peaceful passing of Florence Marie Rose Smith,
97 of Sydney, on Friday August 9th, 2019
at Harbourstone Enhanced Care,
Sydney.
The
last surviving member of her family, Rose was born in Adamsville, NB,
and was the daughter of the late J. Abel and Florence Gertrude
(Swift
) Arsenault.
Mom
grew up in Coal Branch, New Brunswick with ten brothers and sisters.
She was married in 1951 while working for CNR. With the birth of her
first child, Mom stayed at home to take care of the family, living in
Coverdale N.B. Over the next 16 years, Mom and Dad moved five times,
following Dad’s career with Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation.
Following their move to Sydney in 1969, Mom
and Dad joined the former First United Church, Whitney Avenue, and the
Cape Breton Trailer Club. They spent their summers camping with their
many new trailer club friends. During the long winter months, mom enjoyed
furniture refinishing, quilting and doing puzzles. The grandchildren
all enjoyed having one of Mom’s hand-made quilts on their
Beds.
A
veteran of the Second World War, Rose served with the CWAC (Canadian
Women’s Army Corps).
Rose is
survived by her sons Gerry, Howie Center and George, Sydney,
grandchildren Jeffery Smith, Halifax, Jenna (John) MacAulay, Edmonton,
Brent (Kristy) Smith, Dartmouth, Tracy (Phil) Baker
Smith, Halifax, great grandchildren, Rebecca
MacAulay, Luke Smith, Joshua Smith, Theodore
Baker.
She was
predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Gerald, daughter in law Rose
(Robertson) Smith, brothers, Edward, John, Harold, William, James,
Joseph, and Francis, sisters Gertrude, Irene and
Jeanne.
Funeral
service will be held Thursday, August 15th, 2019 at 2 pm in Sydney
Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment to follow, in Forest Haven Memorial
Gardens.
