Elwood Medley Dore

July 31, 1920 – August 26, 2019
With the sweet words of “I love you” from his daughters , and a quiet shared chuckle and wink to his son-in-law, Elwood left them, and the many others who will miss him, to once-again be with the love of his life, Helen. 99 years of joy were enough, it seems, even for a gentle man with the biggest of hearts, who easily shared his love of fun with friends and family alike. A true example of the Greatest Generation, he volunteered from 1940 to the end of WWII, serving as a Tank and Armoured vehicle driver through North Africa, Italy, Holland, France, Belgium, and Germany. Cited for Bravery on many occasions, his modesty only allowed him to accept 6 medals of Campaign recognition, and turn down positions of higher rank and personal medals. Many wonderful memories will remain from the years spent in New Brunswick, creating mischief as one of 11 brothers and sisters, in Southampton and Fredericton, raising 3 girls and 2 boys with Helen, and establishing countless friends along the way. Elwood drove for a living, and was proud to do it well, with a career that took him many places over the years, as Coach Driver, Transport Truck Driver, and Highway Safety Officer. His love of darts and cards fit well into his retirement years, as he held 2 Presidency terms for his Royal Canadian Legion, and rarely turned down a cribbage game. After over a decade of retirement in Southampton, Elwood and Helen moved to Bolton, Ontario to live and laugh with daughter Gwen, and her husband, Robert Ward. But, every summer, the lure of friends and relatives back in Southampton warranted a season of campground get-togethers and golf. Elwood deserves every tear that will be shed over his passing. Few men go through life with such a genuinely kind heart, and thoughtful concern for others. He was proud of the things he accomplished, but even prouder of his children, nephews and nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. As one would say in her class essay, “you didn’t just care for your family, you cared for the World”. No doubt, there will be a dog at his feet, content to be with him again, with expectations of unending treats. Elwood, son of William Dore and Beryl (nee Haines) of Southampton NB, is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughters Gwen (Robert) Ward of Bolton ON, Carol Dore of Bolton ON, and son David Dore of Parksville BC. Elwood is also survived by brothers, Eldon, Karl, and Dean, and sisters, Nora, and Vivian. Elwood was predeceased by his wife Helen (Patterson), daughter Mildred (Phil) Fagan, son Wayne Dore, and by siblings Lloyd, Ellen, Geraldine, John, and Sarah.
A Celebration of Elwood’s life will be held in Southampton, New Brunswick, at some time in the near future.
