Obituary of Dorothy Calhoun Shiers
Age 75 went to be with Jesus surrounded by her daughters Hope, Faith and Charity on August 13, 2019 at home. Born January 25, 1944 in Putnam, Conn., she was a daughter of the late Hobart Leeland and Evelyn Hope (Calhoun) Sanger. In her early 20s Mom was a bookkeeper and then a homemaker and church organist. Mom met Dad in 1969 and they married on her 26th birthday in 1970, and were married for 49 years, raising their three daughters together and living a quiet and simple life by the ocean in a house they built together. Mom loved music, singing, good food, fast driving, NASCAR, horse racing, baseball, nature and her family. Survived by daughters, Hope Shiers, Halifax; Faith (Dan) Allen, Dartmouth; Charity (Terry) Logan, Harrigan Cove; step granddaughter, Brianna Logan; nephews, Glenn (Olga) Kolat, Brian (Kitty) Kolat, David Sanger; nieces, Donita (David) Rarden, Heather (Lenn) Rideout; also survived by her late husbands nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews and one great great niece. Predeceased by her husband, H. William C. Shiers; brother, Hobart; sister, Janet Kolat; nieces, Beverley, Marilyn; sister-in-law, Helen. We will miss Mom’s voice, her enduring patience, her love of good food, her sense of humour, and her music. We will miss her presence immensely. A Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 17th at 11 a.m. in Moser River Independent Baptist Church, Pastor Steve Snell officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery. Reception to follow in the church. At the families request, please wear bright summer coloured clothes for the service, as this was Dorothys favourite. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local food bank. We want to express our gratitude for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Mom by the nurses and staff at the Dartmouth General, Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Dr. Atkinson, Dr. MacDonald. Dr. Zaman, The Palliative Care and Continuing Care teams and EHS. Thanks to son-in-law Dan for the music he played for Mom, and a special thanks to son-in-law Terry for his wonderful care of Mom and making it possible for her to enjoy her last days at home.
