Albert Richard Wells 1915 – 2019

Albert Richard Wells
October 16th, 1915 – July 21st, 2019
Albert Richard Wells was born
on October 16th 1915 in the Venables Valley near Ashcroft BC, the
second youngest child of Andrew Wells and Dora (Hobaugh) Wells, and went to his
final resting place on July 21st 2019 in his 104th year.
Upon completing his education,
Albert worked in construction, logging and mining, notably for Grandby Mining,
Western Nickel and Texada. He enlisted
in the Royal Canadian Army, joining the Royal Canadian Corps of Engineers
during World War II, and took part in the D Day Landing in Normandy. The French government knighted him by
bestowing the Legion d’Honneur in 2015 for his work in France during the War.
Albert married Dorothy Nelson
on April 8th, 1942 in Princeton BC.
Together they traveled and worked all around the world during their 75+
years of marriage. They retired in
Abbotsford BC and eventually moved to Mission, where Dorothy passed away on
September 11th, 2017 at the age of 97, after which Albert relocated
to Kamloops BC to be near family.
Albert and Dorothy loved
hosting gatherings of family and friends at their home in Abbotsford, and were
held in immense affection by young and old for their kindness and hospitality.
They remained very active after retirement. Dorothy was renowned for her
amazing vegetable gardens, which she grew right up until they moved to a
Senior’s complex in Mission despite being severely handicapped by an accident
several years earlier. These gardens
were yet another testament to her strength of character, tenacity and
determination. She and Albert took daily
walks around the complex in Mission to help them stay fit for as long as they
possibly could.
Albert was the last surviving
member of his generation in the Wells family, and was loved for his non-judgmental
kindness, strength of character, incredible wit, absolute determination (and
love of Chinese food!) He never tired of
seeing visitors and made sure the hospitality of his earlier years continued,
always ready to delve into his unfailing memory to modestly recount his
incredibly full and interesting life.
There is now a huge void in
the family, but we are all grateful for having had the privilege of knowing
Albert and his beloved life-partner, Dorothy.
They made our lives richer beyond measure, and it is the end of a
most-wonderful era.
