Obituary for Jocie “Joey” Ethel Maletta
Maletta, Jocie Ethel (Joey)
October 28, 1929
August 16, 2019
Joey passed into the arms of the angels on August 16, 2019 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. She had a very peaceful passing.
Joey was the 7th child of 14 children born to John (Jack) and Jane McKinnon. She was born and raised on a farm in Alexander, Manitoba. She began working at age 10, weeding the neighbor’s garden and finished her work life at 83 as a Weight Watchers counselor. In between she had many different jobs, from serving her country as an MP in the Air Force to a shukh (shoe) sales person in Brandon and Cranbrook. She was also an entrepreneur owning and operating Reflections Fitness for women.
Joey loved playing and watching sports. She was an avid ball player, bowler and enjoyed many years as a Senior Curler. The past 4 years Joey was firmly committed to her Yoga practice. She and Dominic supported the Cranbrook Royals, Cranbrook Colts and Kootenay Ice hockey clubs over the years. Joey enjoyed cheering for the underdog and was a Vancouver Canucks fan.
Generous of spirit, Joey participated in fund raising and financially supporting many charities. Most notable was Joey’s Garden at the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She and Dominic were long time members of the ACT/UCT Service Club in Cranbrook.
Joey believed in working hard, encouraging others and good manners. She had an open mind, she loved to travel, and was always game to try something new. She lived her life as a kind soul and she was the definition of grace. Her zest for life and humor touched many.
Joey is survived by her husband of 64 years Dominic Maletta, Daughter and Son In-Law Diane and Jim Manson and Son and Daughter In-Law Jim and Colleen Maletta. Brothers Norman, Frank and Wayne (Linda) and Sisters Alma and Marie (Barry). Brother In-Law Gene (Serena) and Sisters In-Law Phyllis, Ellen, Janet (Neil) and Judy (Dan), Doreen and Kate.
