Life Story for
William Douglas “Doug” McEwen
McEWEN, William Douglas “Doug” – It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Doug at St. Catharines General Hospital surrounded by family on July 18, 2019 at the age of 72 years. Doug is survived and will be missed dearly by his loving wife Sue (nee Kirkland) and his three children and their spouses, James and Sandra, Michael, and Laura and Rick Atkinson; four grandchildren, Liam, Everett, Claire and Henry, his sister, Mary Marshall (nee McEwen) and her husband Bob; and his niece Gabriela Escudero-Sosler, her husband Stephen and their children Isabella and Xiomi. Doug was the son of Harold Douglas and Ethel Dorothy of Kingston, Ontario.
Following graduations from the Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Engineering programs at Queen’s University, Doug became a member of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and joined Acres International (which later became Hatch Ltd.) as a Civil Engineer and Project Manager, enjoying a career spanning over 42 years. Doug was truly an Engineer to his very core.
Doug will be remembered most as a devoted and loving husband and father who would do anything for his family and friends. Doug could always be counted on for his sense of humour, even at the very end, and his company was always welcomed and appreciated. Doug gained tremendous joy being with his family and pets while also watching his kids and grandkids play sports, spending time at the cottage, wood-working or “puttering” away around the house. Doug was a sailor and avid golfer and he cherished being a committed member of the Acres/Hatch golf league. Additionally, we would like to thank the Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (“IPF”) Support Group of Niagara for their energy, care and commitment to supporting all those affected by IPF.
The family will receive friends at MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main St., Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Monday, July 29, 2019 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to the Toronto General Hospital Foundation (www.tgwhf.ca) in honour of the Live On: The Transplant Campaign, which cared for Doug so dearly, or mail donations to the Niagara Health Foundation in honour of the IPF Rehab Program (1200 Fourth Ave, St. Catharines, ON L2S 0A9).
