Dr. Sandra “Sandy” Sudmant
Such a talented and gifted lady!
Sandy will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. She passed away on June 30, 2019 at the age of 63.
After completing her Bachelor of Science degree Sandy attended UBC and acquired her degree in Dentistry. Her first private practice was on Saltspring Island where she met her husband Jeff Hutchinson. After a few years she moved her practice to Duncan where she worked for more than 25 years. Her patients will remember her for her caring treatment, interest, outgoing personality, as well as her quirky sense of humour.
From a young age Sandy was intensely creative. One Christmas as a child, she built a paper village and forest to place around her father’s model train track at the foot of the Christmas tree.
When she was nine she learned to knit clothes for her little sister’s dolls. As an adult there was no knitting pattern too complex for her to master. Sandy received awards for fabric art and knitting at the local fair and the Sooke Fine Art Show. She designed over 50 unique animal quilt patterns that have sold internationally, as well as designed and made original fabric art wall hangings. She was very gifted and creative in many other areas: making one-off “Sash cord pots”, stained glass boxes and windows , pop-up cards, and recently painted still life pictures, like a master .
Playing music also gave Sandy great joy. She played trumpet in the local orchestra and band for over 20 years, and made good use of her organizational skills to be stage manager for the many concerts over the years.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Jeff Hutchinson, and is survived by her brother John Rheumer and wife Lina; her sister Elizabeth “Beth” Anderson and husband James; her nieces Gioanna and Debra; her very close friends Brian Simpson, Aldine Cole, Norma Pannell, Gary Chilibeck and his family Laura, Emily, Julia and their families.
A “celebration of life” open house for Sandy will be held Saturday July 13, 2019 at 6159 Lakes Road, Duncan between 1-4 pm.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Sudmant Sandra Ruth Sandy June 20 1956
