Obituary
Michael was born November 12, 1924 in the village of Tyriava Silna, near the town of Sianok in what is now south-western Poland, the youngest child in the family of Julia and Dmytro Suchyj. He was brother to Maria, Hania and Joseph. Michael married Maria Makar on May 29, 1947 and together immigrated to Canada in 1949. He and his wife Maria worked as domestics for family of A. Adrian Roberts, the high commissioner for the Union of South Africa Embassy in Ottawa for 2 years, eventually moving to Toronto in 1951. Son Bohdan was born in 1953 and daughter Irene in 1959. Michael and his family have been parishioners of St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral since 1954. He worked as a porter at Toronto General Hospital from 1951 until 1965, transporting hospital and medical equipment for cleaning and sterilization. From 1965 until his retirement in 1990, he worked in the hospitality division of the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club. He was devoted to his family, urging his children to be active participants in religious and cultural activities within the community. His most cherished moments were spent visiting family during summer vacations in Ukraine and Poland, and Easter and Thanksgiving holiday weekends visiting relatives in the United States.
