Marjorie Irene Henry
February 12, 1932 – January 6, 2019
Marj was born in Bowsman, MB and grew up on a farm in Renwer, Manitoba. She helped with the family farm until going out on her own at the age of eighteen to pursue her passion of teaching. She received her teaching certificate in the early 50’s and ventured to Shergrove Manitoba for her first teaching job. Here is where she first met her soulmate and future husband, Leonard. Leonard and Marjorie were married July 9, 1952. Through the years they assumed operation of the general store, post office and farming operation. After closure of the post office Marj opened a tax discounting service for a number of years.
Marj was involved in community activities in the Eddystone district such as the United Church, Ladies Auxilliary, and 4-H clubs. She enjoyed interacting with people and spent countless hours chatting and laughing with people that frequented the store. People who came in to the store as strangers often left as friends.
The store closed in 1990 and they continued the family farming operation until Leonard passed away in 2008. It was at this time Marjorie moved to the Gendreau Home in Ste Rose where she resided until her recent passing.
At family gatherings, she loved nothing more than a good game of Scrabble, Pictionary or Rummoli. She enjoyed holding Leonard’s hand while watching one of his favorite down home music shows, a hockey game or the beloved Weather Network. Over the years, Alzheimer’s disease took hold, but she was always happy and upbeat. She loved children, animals, and listening to hymns. Marj could often be heard singing a song as she was up and down the halls in the Gendreau Home. (He Walks With Me was one of her favorites).
She will be missed by all those her life has touched.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Leonard, son in law Dick, sisters; Doreen and Lillian and brothers; James and Ernest, brother in-law Raymond and sister in- law Eunice, and brother in-law Willy.
She leaves to mourn her children; Gail, Grant (Effie), Sandra, Karen (Grant) and Glen (Marlene), her grandchildren; Allister (Jenny), Graeme and Bryce (Ramsey), her great grandchildren Khaleesi, Liam and Koralee her sister; Shirley (Harvey) and brother Frank (Jeanne),sister in-law Gail, sister in law Donna (Art), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The children of Leonard and Marjorie Henry would be honoured for friends, family and past patrons of Henry’s Store to attend a short memorial service celebrating their lives together on Saturday, July 13th at 2:00 pm. The service will take place at the site of the old Henry’s Store in Shergrove. Please join us to share memories and stories and plant some trees in honour of our parents.
We look forward to seeing you.
