In Loving Memory
of
Marjatta Karhuniemi-Lindsay (nee Lehtola)
75 years
Passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2019 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury.
Beloved wife of Herbert J. Lindsay (predeceased 2016) and Timo Karhuniemi (predeceased 1981). Loving mother of Ricky Karhuniemi (wife Carrie) and Timmy Karhuniemi (predeceased 2018). Cherished Mummu of Michela and Ava Kyrszakos, Braeden and Kirsten Karhuniemi and Mika and Maija Karhuniemi. Dear daughter of Reino and Elli Lehtola both predeceased. Dear sister of Sirkka Ahokangas (Ed Nevala) and Sinikka (predeceased). Dear aunt of Cathie and Anne Ahokangas. Dear great aunt Hannah Rauhanen and Benjamin Lahnalampi.
Marjatta (LuLu) was born February 2, 1944 in Toholanti in Finland. She was the youngest of three girls and to put it mildly – she was full of spirit. She was known to share her words boldly and with a cute smile – that only she could get away with. Marjatta lovingly shared memories of those early times with her family as some of the best times of her life. In the early 1950’s, Marjatta immigrated with her parents to Canada to join Sirkka and her husband.
In Canada, Marjatta grew to feisty long-legged blond woman. She worked with her parents at the Island lake lumber mill. There she fell in love with a handsome lumber jack – Timo Karhuniemi. Timo was a quiet, strong and intelligent man who put LuLu at the center of his world. They lived and worked at Island lake lumber camp for 15 years together, bringing their two sons into the world. Marjatta was a passionate mother and wife – spending time with her children, attending the social gatherings at the lake, the dances at the cookery and sharing sauna steam many evenings with her closest friends. It was a wonderful time, with wonderful memories where the children grew up together, the ladies supported each-other and the men worked as brothers.
In the late 70’s, after the death of her first love, Marjatta came to Sudbury to be close to her parents. She worked many jobs from waitress, receptionist and finally completing her career as a cook in the Breezes nursing home. She did whatever she could to encourage her children’s passions – Rick’s love of motorcycles and Timmy’s love of the outdoors. In those early Sudbury years Marjatta partnered with her parents to give her children all they needed to transition to this new life. Along the way she met Mr. Herbert J Lindsay which she lovingly referred to as “Lindsay”.
Herb and Marjatta had an interesting love story – it did not contain the romance of flowers and chocolates but that of passion, partnership and battles of will. For those who were close to Herb and Marjatta – dinner discussions could range from a heated debate to a loving dance across the deck or living room. They shared the last 30 years of their lives together, joining in a mutual love of a smooth cocktail, a good meal and laughter with friends. During this time, the next generation came into Marjatta’s life. Many summers, her grandchildren were found at Mumu’s – running around in their bathing suits (or naked) with popsicles in hand. She was the Mumu that made WHATEVER you wanted to eat – no matter if it was different than everyone else. She would hold each of them in her rocker – singing Finnish lullabies – no matter their age. She was a passionate and loving Mummu.
After the passing of Herby in late 2016, Marjatta’s heart broke and she was lost. Timmy passed a year later after a long illness and her heart broke even more. This passionate loving woman began to fade. Her health continually declined as she desperately longed for the loves of her life. On July 2, 2019 she rejoined her parents, her loves and Timmy – and is now at peace. Her lessons of love, laughter and a good debate will live on in her grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium.
