Obituary for Mrs. Margaret Elaine Clarke
In her 97th. year, Margaret Elaine Clarke (Benson), passed away at the Foothills Hospital on July 22, 2019.
Fondly known as “Peggy,” she was born on October 9, 1922 to William and May Somerville, and was their only child. She was raised in Cluny, Alberta, and as she had no siblings, was very close to her two cousins, Gwen and Ann Koefoed.
Peggy married Tom Clarke in 1945. They had 3 children, Murray (Layne), Elaine (Duane), and Ross (Kim). She was very proud to say she had nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In 1980, Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Tom.
Years passed, and in 1995 she married Harold Benson, whom she met while playing with a bridge group at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. They enjoyed six wonderful years together until his passing in 2001. Tragedy entered Peggy’s life once again, when she lost her youngest son, Ross, to cancer in 2017. The family was devastated over the loss as well. Peggy led a full life.
She was blessed with a sharp mind and keen memory and was an avid reader and excellent bridge player. She was also a wonderful cook, and everyone enjoyed years of Sunday dinners in her dining room. Many of her fondest memories were of spending time at the cabin at Kananaskis Lake with family and friends. Her last six years were spent living independently in the Manor Village at Garrison Woods in Calgary. She made many new friends and was an active participant in the various Manor activities.
Peggy was a gracious and loving person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
