Katherine “Kay Filax 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kay Filax on July 10th, 2019 at the remarkable age of 100. Kay will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Jolette, granddaughters Alyson, Tricia (Terry), Jennifer, Lisa (Brent), Shannon (George), eight great-grandchildren – Nelson, Augustine, Jordan, Matthew, Tyler, Jason, Jessica, Brandon – and surviving sisters Betty and Dot. She was predeceased by her husband George and son Dale.
Kay was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and married the love of her life, George Filax, in 1941 at Tramping Lake. They later moved to Kerrobert, Saskatchewan and had their son Dale in 1942. After the war they moved to Edmonton and had their daughter Jolette in 1952. They raised their family there until George passed away in 1963.
Kay was an extremely hard worker and was with the Government Student Finance Board for over 20 years before retiring.
Kay was notoriously independent and still living in her own apartment as a centenarian. She was a lover of all things music and dance, and especially her favourites, The Beatles and Elvis. Blue Hawaii was one of her most beloved songs that she proudly sang at her 100th Hawaiian-themed birthday party, alongside an Elvis impersonator, of course.
Kay kept her mind sharp by doing word puzzles daily and watching her go-to game shows and soap operas. She was also a devoted Edmonton Eskimos fan.
What would we give her hand to clasp,
Her patient face to see,
To hear her voice, to see her smile,
As in the days that used to be.
But some sweet day we’ll meet again
Beyond the toil and strife,
And clasp each other’s hand once more,
In Heaven, that happy life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Good Shepherd Parish, 18407 – 60 Avenue Edmonton, Alberta, on July 24th, 2019 at 11 AM.
Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband George.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kay Filax’s name to the Edmonton Humane Society, 13620 – 163 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5V 0B2 in honour of her love of animals.
