Isabel Lois Fraser
1932-2019
It is with broken hearts we announce the death of our Isabel
Lois Fraser (née Dunphy) of Fredericton. With family by her
side, Isabel died peacefully at Pine Grove Nursing Home on Tuesday,
July 16, 2019. Isabel, wife of her beloved Donald Fraser, was born in
Island View on February 3, 1932.
She was kind and compassionate, with a heart for serving
others, whether it was by volunteering at the York Care Centre in
Fredericton or baking homemade sugar doughnuts for loved ones at
Christmas. Isabel enjoyed singing in the St. Paul’s United
Church choir and the Stepping Stones Singers, going for walks in Odell
Park and spending time in her kitchen. For her, cooking, as well as
preparing any delicious treat, was an art. She is lovingly remembered
for her “mocho” cakes over the holiday season and
her heart-shaped cookies dipped in pink icing every
Valentine’s Day. Isabel also enjoyed tending her flower
garden, which was bright, beautiful and radiant — just like
her. She always loved to be around people. A server at the Diplomat
for 28 years, she could take breakfast orders without writing down a
single word — regardless of the number of people seated at
the table.
She adored her husband Donald and was his right hand every
fall, when the duo would go bird hunting in New Brunswick or Manitoba.
Also, she loved the sound of bagpipes whenever Donald and their two
children played together in the Fredericton Society of St. Andrew Pipe
Band. But nothing gave Isabel greater joy than being surrounded by
family and friends at the summer cottage in Island View. There, she
would prepare countless meals that were always made with love and a
sprinkle of creativity. Her life was a gift to everyone she met and a
blessing to her loved ones.
Isabel is survived by her husband and their two children,
James Fraser (Leitha) and Carol Sykes (Brian); her grandchildren,
Elizabeth Fraser (Tristan), Peter Sykes (Kathryn), Vanessa Sykes
(Marcelo) and Sarah Sykes, and her great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Borden
and Isabel.
She was predeceased by her parents James and Kathleen Dunphy,
sisters Joan MacFarlane, Irma Smith, Barbara Reader, and brother
Gerald Dunphy.
A celebration of Isabel’s life will take place at
St. Paul’s United Church, 224 York St., Fredericton on
Tuesday, August 6 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Richard Bowley officiating. A
reception will follow at the church hall. Interment will take place in
the Fredericton Rural Cemetery after the reception. Memorials can be
made to the Pine Grove Foundation, St. Paul’s United Church
or a charity of the donor’s choice.
