L’unica felicità di questa vita è di amare ed essere amati.
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we sorrowfully announce the passing of Elio Di Benedetto. Elio passed away peacefully at Humber River Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, on Wednesday, July 24th in his 91st year. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Annina. Dear brother of his only surviving relative, Maria Pillari (Di Benedetto) of New York city. His family meant everything to him and they always brought a smile to his face. He will also be lovingly remembered by his sons Fulvio Di Benedetto, and Alfredo Di Benedetto (Adriana). He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren David Di Benedetto (Ashley), Alisa Damude (Tory), Paula North (Davin), and his first great-grandchild, Eleanora.
Elio was born to Alfredo and Filomena Di Benedetto in Salle, Italy on March 25th, 1929. He met the love of his life, Annina, when he was 21 years old and they married on March 26th, 1950 in Salle, Italy. In 1951, Elio served in the military for 15 months always sending photos and notes of affection to his bride. He loved to play the trumpet and played it during his military service. Soon after the birth of their two children, Fulvio and Alfredo, they came to Canada and lived in Cornwall, Ontario before making Toronto, Ontario their home. Elio soon found work in the construction industry. As a pastime, he loved to tend to his garden and his tomato plants; build things out of wood for his home and grandchildren; play his trumpet; and, tackle a puzzle – the more challenging, the better. Our memories of him will warm our hearts every day and he will always be remembered.
Family and friends will celebrate his life beginning with visitation on Sunday, July 28, 2019, from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. at De Marco Funeral Home (Keele Chapel), 3725 Keele Street, North York. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 29, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Jane Frances Parish, 2747 Jane Street, North York. Interment will follow at Beechwood Cemetary, 7241 Jane Street (North of Steeles Avenue).
In lieu of flowers, donations will be welcomed by the family in Elio’s memory and can be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Toronto, or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
