Charles Ronald James MacKinlay
MacKinlay, Charles Ronald James – 85, Truro. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Charles “Charlie” Ronald James MacKinlay on June 27, 2019 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Born in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late Francis and Beatrice (Gould) MacKinlay. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 59 years, Ruby (Weatherbee); daughters, Brenda Soutar (Barry Ryan), Truro, Judy Tufts (Sam), Fox Harbour; son, Russell (Janet), Upper LaHave; grandchildren, Jason (Ben) and Aaron (Gina) Tufts, Truro, Hillary MacKinlay, Washington, DC; brother, Robert (Jeanette), Glen Robertson, Ontario and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Eugene and John and son-in-law, Richard Soutar. He graduated from Colchester Academy in 1949 and started working in the insurance business. Charlie retired after 40 years, having worked his way up to Manager of the Atlantic Claims Bureau for Sun Alliance Insurance. He began a second career as a partner in the family- owned maple syrup business, Kirmac Maple Products, retiring again twenty years later. An active member of the Salmon River Fire Brigade for 35 years, he was awarded an Honourary Membership in 1998 and also awarded the title of Honourary Historian after preparing the History of the First 50 Years of the Brigade. He was a member of the First Baptist Church for over fifty years performing many duties as Cub Master, Teller, Board of Management and Board of Deacons. Charlie joined the Masonic Fraternity through Truro Lodge No. 43 where he was a Past Master of the lodge. He also held the post of Very Worshipful District Grand Director of Ceremonies. He was a member and held offices in many other concordant bodies. Charlie was appointed Honourary Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia in recognition of his dedication to the fraternity. At various times in his life, he served as a volunteer in numerous other organizations. Special thanks to the staff of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre especially Palliative Care and Charlie’s Angels in MDU for their loving care and support. A Masonic Service will be held on Tuesday, July 2nd at 7 p.m. followed by a Salmon River Fire Brigade Tribute with visitation until 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 3rd at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Paul Worden officiating, all in the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Reception to follow. Family flowers only. Donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation.
