Clyde deVeer Gross
Clyde deVeer Gross, 97, of
Riverview, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Thursday,
July 25, 2019. Clyde was born in Surrey, Albert Co. on May 8, 1921. He
was the only son of the late Roland and Ivy (Hill) Gross. Aside from
his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Iris
Woodworth.
He attended local schools and
graduated from the Hillsborough High School in 1939. In September,
1939, he was enrolled in the Provincial Normal School in Fredericton,
graduating in 1940 and taught in a local school (Berryton) for one
year before enlisting in the RCAF in August 1941. His unit was the 11
BR. Squadron attached to the Eastern Air Command, engaged in anti
submarine warfare in the North Atlantic, which performed significant
work in the battle of the Atlantic. When the war in Europe ended,
their unit was moved to the west coast where the war with Japan was
ongoing. After the war, Clyde abandoned the teaching profession to
pursue a business career. He joined the Co-op Atlantic Agricultural
Division in 1949 and worked in several positions. In 1966, he was
transferred to Fredericton to manage their operations in that city. In
1973, he returned to Moncton as Manager of the local mill also. In
1979, he was promoted to Production Services Manager with
responsibilities to maintain and renew all Feed Mill
operations.
In September 1948, he married
Emma Power. They shared a very happy and eventful married life
together, happy to be each other’s best friend and
companion. Together they crated the Emma and Clyde deVeer Gross
Scholarship at the University of New Brunswick, open to the residents
of New Brunswick. They enjoyed travelling, visiting Europe, Central
America and often to Madeira Beach in
Florida.
The Gross family was one of
the first settlers of Albert County. They were descendants of the
French Hugenot. Richard Gross was a shipwright and built several ships
on the Petitcodiac River. He was a large landowner who donated land to
build the Valley Baptist Church in Surrey.
Clyde was an avid reader with
wide and varied interests. He was lifelong learner with a continual
search for knowledge. His interest in Financial Markets allowed him to
participate in charitable donations.
His retirement in 1984 allowed
him more time to participate in such
ventures.
Clyde will be sadly missed by
his wife, Emma (Power) and several nieces and
nephews.
Visitation at Fergusons
Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Saturday from
2:00 to 4:00 pm. A Service to celebrate and honour Clyde’s
life will be held from Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, July
28, 2019 at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Gordon Horsman leading the service.
Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service.
Interment will be in Fair Haven Memorial
Gardens.
