Obituary for
Marjorie C. Rose
Rose (Sutherland), Marjorie Christene – 96, of McNair Manor, Moncton, NB, formerly of Truro, passed away on June 7, 2019 in Moncton, NB. Born in Earltown, NS, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Christine E. (Matheson) Sutherland.
During World War II, she served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps at Embarkation Pier 21, Halifax, where soldiers boarded and returned in troop ships. Before returning to civilian life, Marjorie married Lewis Rose with whom she travelled during his continuing military career. She lived in 24 apartments and houses and excelled at packing the family belongings and making a home for her family wherever they lived. Her favourite things were the family photos, her books and gatherings at their cottage in Brule Point.
Marjorie was a long-time employee of the Tartan House in Halifax and an accomplished kilt maker, having sewn more than 300 kilts entirely by hand for highland dancers, pipers, politicians and entertainers. Marjorie was active in the Clan Sutherland Association with whom she enjoyed many Highland Games and two trips to Scotland. Marjorie enjoyed sewing, knitting, crossword puzzles and reading.
She is survived by and will be sadly missed by daughters, Carolyn (Bob) Smith, Moncton, NB, Wendy (late Paul) Foote, Edmonton, AB; son, John (Susan), Sackville, NB; five grandchildren, Krista (Brian) Rietzel, Sean (Kristin) Smith-Robson, Valerie Foote, Duncan and Cameron Rose and four great grandchildren, Brianna and Kelsey Rietzel, Malcolm and Raegan Smith-Robson. Also survived by sisters, Mae (late Donald) Wallace, Ruth (late Merle) Chisholm; brother, Alwyn (late Irene) Sutherland; sister-in-law, Marge, England and many nieces and nephews including an especially devoted niece, Susan Chisholm.
Besides her parents, Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Lewis H. Rose in 2004 and infant daughter, Margaret.
In Marjorie’s memory, donations may be made to Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke or charity of choice. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 22nd from 1 – 2 p.m. with service following at 2 p.m. both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro.
