Engeline Antonia Mittertreiner Piët was born the eldest daughter of eight to Antonius and Paulina Mittertreiner in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. Engeline died suddenly in the company of her family on Monday, July 15, 2019 at the age of 93 years.
Engeline, a proficient secretary, worked in the Medical Office of the Royal Netherlands Navy. From this experience, she grew to appreciate broader life challenges outside the shelter of her family. Engeline married the love of her life, Harry, and then immigrated to Canada to gain opportunities for their future family. Engeline continued to work as a secretary supporting their new life in rural Alberta. Mom and Dad worked together as successful independent immigrants throughout their marriage.
Engeline cultivated a love of reading and learning in her children and urged them to pursue the university education she never had. Engeline realized that one had family in neighbours, friends and the church community, and she actively developed lifelong relationships. She pursued her interests as a yoga teacher and continued her spiritual journey which led to contemplative prayer and Christian meditation. Engeline fulfilled her vocation through her spiritual direction and being an active member of the FCJ Christian Life Centre. Engeline gave courses and retreats over a 38 year period until her retirement in 2018. She said her greatest privilege was to teach others how to meet God. Her calm and loving demeanour attracted many people to speak to her about their lives. She taught them through prayerful silence how to manage the difficulties of life, always trusting in God’s help. She was a very good listener, a teacher of life lessons through her actions, and an inspiration to many. Engeline understood self care, accepting help and assistance from many in her village. She was our little redhead who always said “Yes!”. She enjoyed attention, keeping score and winning games, good natured teasing and especially time spent with her family.
Oma cultivated her relationships with her grandchildren offering her love and kind support to their pursuits. Engeline is predeceased 7 weeks ago by her husband of 65 years, Harry, and is survived by the families of their five children. John (Diana) and grandchildren Katherine, Benjamin, Johanna, and Thomas. Predeceased by her son, Richard (surviving spouse Janice) and grandchildren Scott, Rachel, Eric, and Lucas. Maureen (Edwin) and grandchildren Bernard and Dominic (Rachel). Elly (Paul) and Leona (Bob). An adopted son Leon (Ann Marie) and grandchild Megan.
The family wishes to thank the parish community of St James Catholic Church and FCJ Christian Life Centre, and the staff and residents of the Manor Village at Garrison Woods for their many acts of kindness during her elderly years.
