George M. Verzyl (Govert Machiel), age 79 passed away at home on Saturday July 13, 2019.
He was born on August 28, 1939 in Wyk en Aalburg, Netherlands to Albert and Margaret Wilhelmina (DeBruijn) Verzyl. He and his family moved from Netherlands to Brandon Manitoba in 1957. He then moved to Winnipeg and followed his family to Ontario. He met and married Donna in Norwich. They moved to Thamesford where they had their two children. He moved to Scotland and became a small business man opening a heating and cooling shop. Donna passed away at this time and George then moved to St George and expanded his business to include a hardware store. The hardware store was sold after a couple of years. In 1979 he went to work for White farm equipment in the development division.
In 1981 he moved to Prince Rupert and went to work at the pulp mill. He met and married Debra in 1983.
While in Prince Rupert he had an aviary, breeding hook bills and enjoyed building toys in his shop at home. He also got his first Basenjis. He started to go to dog shows and found his new hobby. When he moved to Ladysmith this hobby expanded to breeding, showing and lure coursing with the Basenjis…and then he added in Australian Terriers.
George will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend Debra, and his children, Michael (Leslie) and Ida Middleton (Jason Young), by his brothers and sisters Bert (Dianne), Wilhelmina (Fred) Mouat, Andrew, Albert (Lynn), Jean (Phillip) Raney , His Grandchildren Melissa, Sabrina, Aislynn and Riley and his great grandson Caivin. He will also be remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends. George was predeceased by his parents and his first wife Donna (Robinson).
A Celebration of George’ s life will be held from 1:30 to 4:00 on Thursday July 25 at Aggie Hall ( 1110 1st Ave., Ladysmith BC, V9G 1B9). Please come and share your memories.
In lieu of flowers Memorial donations in memory of George can be made to the health related charity of your choice.
