It is with broken hearts that the family of Norval Butland announce his passing which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday morning, July 9th, 2019. Born in West River, Albert County on May 10, 1939, he was the son of the late Harry and Treva (Yensen) Butland. Norval was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. His family is comforted in knowing that he is reunited with his wife, Carol (Waddell) Butland. This fall would have marked their 60th wedding anniversary. He was a tall man with a huge heart who was known for his kindness. He was a master story teller with a sense of humour to match. A successful entrepreneur, he owned many businesses through the years, including Butland’s on Bayside and Butland’s in the Market. He was happiest boating and spending time with family and friends at the cottage in Erb’s Cove. He loved to watch boxing, play board games and cards (he especially loved dinner and cards night at his in-laws’, Don and Flora Gamblin) and considered himself George Jones’ biggest fan. He was a faithful member of Kings Church and was passionate about his volunteering. He was a member of the “Red Shirt Team” and was always willing to do what was needed from washing dishes to putting up the 20 foot Christmas tree. Norval is survived, and will be missed, by his children Bonnie Merzetti (Douglas), Rick Butland (Cheryl Thomas) and Tracie McGrath (Trevor); precious grandchildren Corey, Caleb, Kerri, Kelcy, Joshua, Kristi, Jessica, Grace and Rick and 11 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife, Norval was predeceased by his siblings Herman Butland, Phyllis Friars, Reg Butland and Alice Guitar.
