Surrounded by her loving family, Genevieve Mary Vos went to her eternal life on July 5, 2019 after living a full beautiful 90 years.
Born the youngest of 13 children to Henry and Catherine Vos, Gen was a “ray of sunshine” in everyone’s lives. Her sunny disposition, easy laughter, love of life and deep compassion for others and devout faith defined Gen.
After completing her schooling in Strome, and Edmonton at Rosary Hall, Gen entered nursing at the Edmonton General Hospital, graduating… Read More » in 1953. This led to a long and wonderful career as a Registered Nurse. Her nursing career led Gen to work in rural and urban hospitals in Alberta, as well as in Mason City Iowa. One of the most important nursing assignments that Gen undertook was missionary nursing in the Dominican Republic. Gen worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses, and finished her career working at the Glenrose Auxiliary. The members of Gen’s nursing class have remained close friends, traveling together over the years to Hawaii and Alaska among other places. As the “nurse in the family”, Gen cared for several of her siblings. She was always available with a compassionate ear, and willingness to help.
Gen enjoyed hiking, skiing, birding, her dog Amigo, and traveling with family and friends to destinations near and far. Gen was very close to her sister Kathleen, and they would often be found together. Gen was always singing, and was a member of several choral groups.
Family gatherings were very important to Gen, and with her joy of life, Gen was a family favorite at all events. Most important of all was Gen’s deep and devout faith. She was a long time member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish in Calgary, where she was active in several ministries, including coordinating Pastoral care. Gen was a secular Franciscan.
Gen is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Vos and Jean Vos, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Henry and Catherine Vos, and her siblings Florence, Helen, Mary, Mable, Cecilia, Irene, Anthony, Leo, Alfred, Agnes, Kay, and Henry, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Gen will remain in our hearts and prayers. Our lives are filled with precious memories of Gen’s laughter, singing, love, caring and joy of life. The family would like to thank the staff of Tudor Manor for the exceptional care they have provided Gen over a number of years.
