KATHLEEN MAY SMART
With heavy hearts we share the peaceful passing of Kathleen May Smart, aged 93, early in the morning on a beautiful summer day, Wednesday June 19, 2019 at the Grace General Hospital.
Kathleen was predeceased by her husband Leslie in 1980, her brother Dave Hazlitt and his wife Rose as well as her sister-in-law Betty Corbett (UK). She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and her long time caring friends from England, Gwen and Norm Saggers and Clytie Porter.
Kathleen was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan to David and Jessie Hazlitt. In 1943 at the age of 17, as a very determined girl, she married the love of her life Leslie, a British airman who had been training in Canada. Following the war, she joined him in England where they resided until their return to Canada in 1955 settling in Winnipeg.
Kathleen worked in the accounting department of Motor Coach Industries for 29 years prior to her retirement in 1984. During her long retirement she spent several years as a volunteer at the Beacon Hill Lodge tuck shop and enjoyed numerous trips to England, several cruises with friends from Canada and England and many happy holidays in Hawaii with her brother, Dave and his wife Rose. Kathleen enjoyed many years as a “keen” (but not good) bowler with the Eaton’s league and the St. James Golden Agers.
Kathleen was a spirited and determined person with a big heart who shall be missed dearly. She did not suffer fools nor poor service and was quick to tell you about it. She enjoyed the company of numerous dogs during her lifetime and loved walking them in the neighborhood of Silver Heights where she made her home for 50 years.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place at a private gathering in Thomson In The Park Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the many caring people from home care that assisted Kathleen, enabling her to remain in her home until she walked out for the last time on June 17, 2019.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities.
