Vaughn H.
Alward, 88, of Sackville, passed away peacefully at The Moncton
Hospital on Tuesday, May 28, 2019. Born in Moncton on May 18, 1931, he
was the son of the late Nison V. and Alice M. (Branscombe)
Alward.
Vaughn is
survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn (Downs) Alward of Sackville;
daughter, Patricia Jane (Glenn) of Turner Valley, Alberta; son,
Alexander John (Melissa) of Campbellton and special grandparents to
Lauren and Jonathan Ross.
He was
predeceased by his parents and the passing of an infant son, Peter
James Alward in 1962.
Vaughn
received his early education in Moncton primary schools and The
Moncton High School. After basic schooling he entered CNR, Moncton
Shops as a Blacksmith Apprentice. After completing several more years
of service he moved to become a staff blacksmith at Dorchester
Penitentiary. This last move provided opportunities for advancement,
travel and educational in other parts of the country, including Nova
Scotia, Ontario and Alberta.
This fresh
environment provided new opportunities for academic upgrading at the
post secondary level, including a Bachelor of Arts, with honours, at
University of New Brunswick, a Master of Education, and a PhD in
Educational Administration at the University of Alberta. All of the
above were completed while Vaughn was holding full time positions in
the Correctional Service of
Canada.
While
residing in many communities across the land, at various times, Vaughn
and his wife Marilyn made every effort to become contributing
citizens, beginning in Moncton and running full cycle back east to
Sackville, NB; for example, Moncton Volunteer Fire Dept., Moncton
Garrison Militia, RCEME (CD), Westmorland Historical Society, Port
Elgin Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellowship), PC Party of NB (honourary
Life Member), Keith Lodge #23, F&AM (61 year pin). A proud
member of The United Empire Loyalist Association, NB
Branch.
His
Christian faith always played an important role in Vaughn’s
life, beginning with his baptism as a boy on April 25, 1943 at First
Baptist Church Moncton.
Visitation
at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on
Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Keith Lodge No. 23, F. & A. M.
Masonic Service will be held in Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel at 5:45
pm. A Service to celebrate and honour Vaughn’s life will be
held in Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at
11:00 am, with Rev. Hugh Kirkegaard and Rev. Sandy Sutherland
officiating. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following
the service. Interment will be in Elmwood
Cemetery.
In memory of Vaughn, donations
to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Cystic Fibrosis Society would be
