Mary’s Obituary
Mary’s mother was a WW1 war bride, born in Ayre, Scotland where she met her husband-to-be Robert Clayton Rose, who was stationed in Ayre with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Mary was very proud of her Scottish ancestry and spoke of it often. Mary was born and grew up in St. John’s in Ayre’s Cottages (no longer in existence). She attended Spencer College, an all girls school and was always proud to be known as a “ Spencer Girl”. She loved St. John’s and her childhood and often reminisced about her young life there through University, and her research career with the Provincial Department of Fisheries, a position she loved.
As a result of a family employment transfer, she moved to Corner Brook but she never forgot her roots. She accepted a management position at Western Memorial Regional Hospital and retired in 1995. She was an avid gardener and took great pleasure in developing gardens and enjoying what they had to offer. She loved her pals, especially her golfing partners and could hardly wait for the course to open each year. She played with the same group of girls year after year and they all became great friends. Her “buds” she called them.
Mary was a wonderful lady, a very proud and private individual who loved and respected her friends and family. She never wanted anyone to make a fuss over her but often fussed over others. That was her nature. Mary leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband, Carl Loughlin, her daughter Jennifer Drysdale Kerr Rowe (John Corbin), precious grandson Matthew Robert John Corbin, brother Donald (Bud) Rose (Stella), St. John’s, sister-in-law Rosalind Rose, and a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. Mary was predeceased by her father, 1989 Robert Clayton Rose, 1968, her mother Mary Drysdale Rose (nee Cowan), her daughter Mary Louise Rowe, who passed away in 1989 with her mom at her side though this very difficult time; her sisters Janet Audrey Kerr Davis 2016 in Calgary, AB, and Florence Louise Rose 2014, St. John’s, her brother Robert Cowan Rose 2019, St. John’s.
Family and friends may gather at Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road, on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from the hours of 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. There will be no funeral at this time. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
At this time we wish to extend our sincere thanks to the nursing and medical staff of Western Memorial who cared for Mary with such skill, kindness and compassion, and who treated her family with thoughtfulness and understanding.
