Margaret “Peggy”‘s Obituary
Of Telfer Place, passed peacefully at the Brantford General Hospital, on Friday May 24, 2019. She was 92 years of age. Peggy was the loving wife of Alfred G. Davies Sr. (2012), former wife of the late Wilbert R. Elsey and Carl E. Irwin (1950). She was born a twin in 1926 in St. Catharines, Ontario. Daughter of Wilfrid Thorne and Edith Breakspeare Thorne (later Kinnaird), lived in Welland, grew up in Port Colborne. After the war, she went to Toronto to live and work, soon married then was widowed in 1950. A new marriage in 1951 took her to St. Thomas where her first child Evelyn Elsey was born. 1953 brought the family to Brantford where 2 more boys were born, Chuck in 1954 (1999) and David, born in 1956. In 1971, she married Alf and moved to Paris, accepting 2 more young children as her own, Shawn and Cheryl, plus Alfred Jr., who lived in Brantford. Peggy and Alf lived happily at Telfer Place since 2007.
Surviving Peggy are her daughters, Dr. Evelyn Elsey Caroline (Brian) of Barrie, Cheryl Davies Hayes (Don) of Paris, and her sons, David Elsey (Patti) of Burlington, and Shawn Davies (Megan) of Paris, 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Survived by her daughter- in- law Sabrina Elsey (Kit Ping Liu) of Vancouver, two sisters in laws, Florence Ormsbee of Halifax and Trudy Thorne of Toronto. Predeceased by son Charles Elsey (1999), brother Bill (2011), and several brother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s in Brantford.
Peggy worked for more than 40 years in several offices including Bell Telephone, Reynolds Brantford, and Bank of Commerce in Paris. She was a life member and former President of the Willett Auxiliary. She served on the Willett Hospital Board of Governors (now BCHS) and the Willet Hospital Foundation Board. She served on the Board of Management of St. James’ Anglican Church in Paris for 10 years as the Secretary, then Treasurer. Peggy was a proud and active member, and celebrated 60 years in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in 2014. She was a Cancer Drive Volunteer for many years and received a 25 Year Volunteer Certificate from the Province of Ontario. At Telfer Place, she was a member, then Chairperson on the Resident’s Council.
Friends are welcome to join the family on Sunday June 9th 2019, at the DWAYNE D. BUDGELL Funeral Home, 1105 Rest Acres Rd, Paris, between 1 to 2 pm to pass on condolences. At 2 pm, the family will share their memories of Peggy. Following the short memorial, all are invited to join us for a gathering in the reception hall for a light lunch until 4 p.m. In accordance with Peggy’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. Interment at Glen Oaks Cemetery in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Brant Community Healthcare Foundation, directed to the Willet Hospital, (www.bchsys.org) would be appreciated by the family.
