Memorial Donation
Lewis Edward Stenger of Brooks, beloved husband of the late Myrtle (nee Guedo) Stenger, passed away in Brooks, Alberta on April 29th, 2019 at the age of 92 years. Born in Papasalamon, Hungary on August 26th, 1926 he was the first born son to Maurice and Elizabeth Stenger. The family resided there until 1929, when he left Hungary with his mother and sisters Matilda and Margaret to meet father in Canada. They journeyed across Europe to Cherbourg, France where they boarded the Ausonia of the Cuinard shipping line. Their eight day journey landed them in Montreal on November 10th, 1929. From there they journeyed to the family farm in Empress, Alberta. Farming was not prosperous in the Empress area during the Great Depression, and the family left and came to the Tilley area in the early 1930’s. Dad took his schooling in Tilley until grade 8, when he started working. He had various labour jobs, until he was able to drive and became a gravel truck driver. His early work days were with Paul Juhas. Quite often when we would go for Sunday drives, we heard his stories of the building of the roads we were on. He worked on most of the roads that exist today in southern Alberta and built those on Suffield Base. Dad was a bachelor up to and through most of his 30’s, when he meet Mom. On August 3rd, 1963, they were married at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. They started their life together living in Brooks. The first residence was located where the Kentucky Fried Chicken (now Rists Shoes) building was. The home is now located on the Duchess Highway. Along with driving truck, Dad liked farming and in 1965 he and Mom purchased their first farm. His pride was his purebred Charolais herd and running Lewis Stenger Trucking. In 1978, we moved to the One Tree to continue farming. He didn’t keep his truck but did keep driving, working with Art Redelback and John Kazimir. In 1997, at the age of 70, he decided to try retirement and Mom and he bought the house in town, however, retirement meant driving out to the farm every day but he did sell the cows! With Mom’s early passing, going out to the farm continued until he was not able to drive out there. He missed Mom dearly, but continued to live on his own until he was admitted to Brooks Hospital in February. Dad had a good life and was proud of his family. He was predeceased by both parents; parents-in-law Henry and Anna Guedo; his sister Matilda; brother William Stenger; brothers-in-law Frank Suhai, William Tell, Mike Link, Red Fellows, Roland Guedo, Eric Urban and Ron Guedo; sisters-in-law Barb Stenger and Doreen Guedo. He is survived by Donovan Stenger of Scandia; Christie Waldner and her husband Paul and daughter Kaitlyn; Patrick Stenger and his wife Terina and children Kyle (great grandchildren Alina and Milo), Alicia, and Emily; Fiona MacGillivray and her husband Kevin and their children Michael Edwards (partner Blaize and great granddaughter Mackenzie) and Ashley MacGillivray all of Brooks; sisters, Margaret Tell, Betty Link, and Helen Fellows; brothers, Maurice (Jean) Stenger and John Stenger; sisters-in-law, Sadie Guedo, Dorma Guedo and Linda Guedo and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.
