John Fenwick BRAYLEY March 2 1939 May 15 2019 (age 80)

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing at home of our beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather John Fenwick Brayley on May 15 2019 following a nine month battle with cancer.
John was predeceased by his parents John [Jack] and Zeversa (nee Gibbon) Brayley. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Brenda (nee Butler), sons John (Caroline) and Doug (Yoko), sister Sally (Jim), grandchildren Tyler (Jessica), Allison, Douglas, Christopher (Dori), Laura and Jacqueline, great grandchildren Elizabeth and Zeversa, nephews Mark (Gretchen), Tim and Blair (Kathryn).
John was born in London, England on March 2 1939. He lived there until 1943 when his family returned to Canada eventually settling in Halifax, NS. In 1957 John boarded a freighter bound for Ireland to begin a five month adventure of a lifetime bicycling and hitchhiking throughout Europe.
Upon his return to Halifax, John was accepted into the RCMP in December 1957. Over the course of thirty years, he had an exciting and illustrious career and developed many friendships in the ten communities where he was posted. His postings ranged from small outports in Newfoundland and Labrador to teaching nationally the “new” computer information system (CPIC) based out of Head Quarters in Ottawa, ON to being in charge of CPIC operations in Halifax, NS for all of the Maritimes. In 1982, while off duty, he noticed a young man had not resurfaced from a lake. He dove in and hauled the lifeless body to shore where he gave mouth to mouth resuscitation and saved the young man’s life.
Upon his retirement as Staff Sergeant in 1987 John and Brenda moved to Sidney on Vancouver Island where he was in his element boating and fishing around the Southern Gulf Islands. In 1994 John and Brenda moved to Qualicum Beach where John’s adventurous spirit continued, traveling and exploring around Canada and the US. John was a passionate and caring person who enjoyed being with his grandchildren. Friends and family will miss his selflessness, wit and wisdom and quirky sense of humour.
Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Peter Haslett for his loving care of John. Also, our thanks to John’s Palliative Care Team for the compassionate care he received during his last two weeks.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at Yates Memorial Services, 1000 Allsbrook Road in Parksville on June 9th from 1 PM to 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oceanside Hospice Society or to a charity of your choice.
