106
Esther Elizabeth Chute – age 106, of Berwick, passed away on
Monday, May 20, 2019 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville.
Born in Aylesford, she was a daughter of the late Robert Ainsley and
Helen “Nellie” Jane (Turner) Keddy. Esther was a
charter member of the South Berwick Women’s Institute for
over 60 years, serving as Treasurer of the West Kings District 3 until
she was 103. She was a member of the St. Eudora Rebekah Lodge No. 43
from 1982 until 2014. During that time, she held many offices,
including Highest Noble Grand and Deputy President for District 3A,
running weekly card parties for decades. She was a member of Christ
Anglican Church, Berwick and ACW for over 63 years. She was honoured
as the Oldest Active Square Dancer in North America. Following the
death of her husband, Raymond, in 1958, she continued to run the
family mixed fruit farm for another 12 years while maintaining a
career as executive assistant with Minas Basin Pulp and Power. She is
survived by her daughter, Joan Balcom, Berwick; sisters, Florence
Carter, Somerset; Marguerite Field, New Minas; brother, Alden (Linda),
Berwick; grandchildren, Allen (Joan) Balcom, Berwick; Betty Ann
Balcom, Berwick; Cheri Crosby, British Columbia; Michael (Lisa) Chute,
Port Williams; Greg Chute, Aylesford Lake; great-grandchildren,
Cody-Ray Balcom-Winkelman, Dezaray Balcom-Winkelman, Kristopher
Balcom, Krena (Bryce) Carey, Christopher Chute, Andrea (Brandon)
Benjamin, Sean Crosby; great great-grandchildren, Victoria Gates,
Madeline Gates, Alexandria Carey, Ryden Benjamin; daughter-in-law,
Myrtle Chute; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her
husband, Raymond; son, Harley; brothers, Alfred, Morris, Henry,
Gordon, Dorn; grandson, Brian Balcom; three nephews, Garnet Keddy,
David and Lindsay Carter. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on
Tuesday, May 28, 2019, with a St. Eurdora Rebekah Lodge service to be
held at 6:00 p.m., in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The
funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2019
in the Christ Anglican Church, Berwick, Reverend Mel Malton
officiating. A private family interment will take place in the Berwick
Cemetery. Following the interment, a reception will be held in the
Christ Anglican Church Hall, Berwick. Flowers are welcome. The family
wishes to thank the staff at Evergreen Home for Special Care for their
exceptional care and compassion shown to Esther during her time there.
Donations in memory may be made to Christ Anglican Church Memorial
Fund or the Berwick Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted
to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
