Our dear mother passed away at the Sackville Memorial Hospital, Sackville NB, on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the age of almost 97 years.
Born in Murray Corner, NB, on June 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Georgie (Robinson) Hicks.
Emma was the beloved wife of the late Reginald Stanley Shaw; mother of Gloria (Allan) Hillier, of Murray Corner, NB, Randy (Wanda) Shaw of Mount Pearl, NL, the late Curtis (Patsy)Shaw of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, Narda (Patrick) Robbins of Gibbons, AB and Vernon (Rhonda) Shaw of Labrador City, Labrador; grandmother of Vaughn (Debra) Stampe, Trent (Lori) Stampe, Laurie Lynn (Calvin) Wall, Terri (Mitch) Bryant, Jodi (Phillip) Langille, Aimie (Ted) Heibert, Jocelyn (Kurt) Smith, Jennifer (Dagan) Kelly, Andrea (Craig) Courchene, Nathan (Danielle) Robbins, Mindy (Veysey) Shaw and Keith Shaw. She loved twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, and she is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. Emma also leaves behind a large circle of special friends whom she cherished very much. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her beloved husband, Reginald, and her son Curtis, she is pre-deceased by her mother and father; her sisters, Maida Cole, Averil Bellamy, Mildred Darragh, Lottie Costain, as well as by her brother, Vernon Hicks.
Soon after marrying, her husband was sent overseas to fight in WWII and upon his return they settled in Jolicure, NB in 1946, where they farmed for ten years. In 1956 she moved with her husband and young family to Happy Valley, Labrador where she operated the first CNT office, was the first Town Clerk, was Postmistress for several years and she and her husband also operated two businesses. In later years, she worked in retail, ending her working career at Northern Lights Store. Upon retirement in 1982, she and her husband and youngest son returned to NB and settled in Quispamsis. Because of Emma’s incredible strength, she was able to overcome many difficult challenges, and this strength helped her to enjoy a busy life with her friends bowling, playing darts and playing cards. Her life was filled with much fun, laughter and love.
The family wishes to especially thank the staff at Autumn Lee Special Care Home, Sackville, for the exceptional, warm and loving care they gave mom. She thrived in their love.
