  1. I’m heartbroken at the passing of my father.

I will cherish my memories of him dating back to my birth in Toronto where I lived with him until my parents divorced. I moved with my mother, Raihi Wihongi Hillam, and my older sister, Julia Austin-Prime, to New Zealand and eventually to America where I grew up.

Despite our distance, we kept in touch over the years. I recall fondly a trip to Toronto in the 1970s when Julia and I visited with dad and met our younger sister, Stacey, for the first time. We visited Niagara Falls, CN tower, and other local sites.

Dad traveled to Salt Lake City to visit Julia and I when I was in elementary school and in 1984, he journeyed with Stacey to attend my wedding. Most recently, Julia and I visited him in Victoria in 2014. I will never forget seeing his smiling face as we disembarked from the ship as he waited to greet us.

My dad encouraged my love of history and was always interested in the happenings of my children–Wesley, Ellen and Dylan. His many cards and letters are among my precious family heirlooms as are the scrapbooks he made of my visits with him in Toronto and Victoria.

Dad’s legacy will continue on in the lives of his three daughters and grandchildren.
