Crowe – 78, Central
Onslow. It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful
passing of Ron Crowe on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Colchester East
Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, he was the son of the late
Neil and Marjorie (MacBurnie) Crowe.
Ron is survived by his wife, best friend and love of his
life, Iola, for 53 years; children, Darren (Robyn), Lower Onslow;
Shelley (Charles) MacLellan, Valley; adored grandson, Brennan Crowe;
sister, Mary (Bruce) Currie, Masstown; mother-in-law, Sylvia McMillan;
brother-in-law, Wayne (Carol) McMillan; sisters-in-law, Darlene (Vic)
MacFarlane, Joyce McMillan; aunt, Pearl Wilson; uncle, Calvin (Kathy)
Peppard several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He will
be dearly missed by his pet cat, Molly.
Ron attended Onslow Parade School in 1945-1946 and then moved
to Peace River, Northern Alberta where he went to school one term, six
miles each by horseback. In 1949 he attended Princess Margaret Rose
School and then on to Truro Junior High and Colchester County Academy
(CCA). He was involved in many sporting activities and was successful
in mastering most all such as bowling, snooker, basketball, baseball,
hockey, fastball, golf, cribbage and the love of his life, curling. In
mid to late ‘60s, he refereed basketball games at Acadia,
Dalhousie and St. FX universities with Dave Yould and Lloyd
Sutherland.
In mid ‘70s he was a referee in Chief of Maritime
Firefighter’s Summer Games involving all three provinces in
competitions. He was also instrumental in organizing Colchester
Firefighters Curling League in 1971 with Chet Lane, Jack Tattrie and
Don Bartlett from which many went on to be members of Truro Curling
Club. In 1992, he was elected President of Truro Curling Club for one
term. He also served as Deputy Chief of Onslow Belmont Fire Brigade
from 1975-1985. His love of curling became more important in his life
whereby he was elected Provincial Director for Nova Scotia
Firefighters Curling Association in 1979 and served to 1986 from where
he was further elected to the National Board as Secretary-Treasurer
from 1990-1996 and then a further honour of being elected to Life
Membership to Canadian Firefighters Curling Association in 1996. This
enabled him and Iola to travel over the past 40 years and together
have had 32 trips across Canada, having visited every province,
including the far North (Yellowknife).
He participated in three National Stick Curling
Championships, one with Ted Lohnes (2009) and two with Bill Spinney
(2012 and 2013) in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, Edmonton, Alberta
and New Glasgow. Having won a bronze medal in 2017 in a field of 48
entries, this was the first “medal” in Stick Curling
representing Truro Curling Club. He received an Appreciation Award in
2019 from Nova Scotia Stick Curling Competitive League, was recognized
in Kelowna, British Columbia in 2019 for over 40 years participation
in Provincial Firefighters Curling Championship and was recognized and
congratulated by the House of Assembly of April 2, 2019 for being
honoured by the Canadian Firefighters Curling Association as a life
member and for being inducted as a life member of the Nova Scotia
Firefighters Curling Association.
During the 1989 Federal Election, he took a “leave
of absence” from the School Board (bus garage) to take on
responsibilities of Automation Coordinator for Colchester, Cumberland
and Musquodoboit Valley riding with the end result being the printing
of Electors list under the directions of Returning Officers Dave
Mason, Ken Starratt and Darlene MacKay and subsequently went on to
work in eight further Federal Elections. His love of music was
‘50s-‘60s, country and old time fiddle. Two
favourite songs that stand out are “I Did It My Way”
by Elvis Presley and “Blue Spanish Eyes” by Freddy
Fender.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where a
Firefighter’s Tribute Service will be held 1:30 p.m.,
Monday, April 8, 2019, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m.,
Reverend Glenn MacLean officiating Reception will follow. Spring
interment in Onslow Island Cemetery. If so desired, donations in
Ron’s memory to Trinity United Church, Onslow Belmont Fire
Brigade or a charity of choice are welcomed. Private messages of
