MacKENZIE, The Rev. A.E. Douglas – Peacefully at University Hospital with his wife and three daughters by his side on Friday, April 26, 2019 in his 84th year.
Lovingly remembered by his wife Mary, daughters Jennifer (Bruce), Martha (Hamish), and Jessica (Sean). Adored by nine grandchildren: Oliver, Jane, Maddie, Eli, Sophie, Mackenzie “Max”, Sam, Hannah and Claire. Also missed by his first wife Helen, his step-sons Colin, Bruce, Douglas and David McKim and their families. Predeceased by his seven brothers and sisters.
Warm and generous, Doug was a phenomenal athlete with a keen intellect and quick wit. He graduated from Western University in 1959, where he played football for the Mustangs, followed by a professional career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In 1991, he was inducted into the Western Mustangs Sports Hall of Fame. Doug returned to Western for his Masters in History and eventually held various positions at the University. He was Foreign Student Advisor and Head of the Office of International Education, welcoming students from all over the world into his home. Doug was a strong advocate for the under-privileged. Ordained as an Anglican Priest in 1986, he served in several parishes including St. Aidan’s and St. John the Divine, Arva. He also authored several history books. Happiest on the golf course, Doug was an avid traveller and tour leader, and a crossword aficionado.
The funeral service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 280 St. James St. at Wellington on Friday, May 3, at 11 am. Reception to follow in the parish hall. Private interment St. John’s Cemetery, Arva.
