Mark Richard – 1979 to 2019 – at age 40, died peacefully and gently, with family beside
him, at Toronto General Hospital, having succumbed to a final complication of his 3.5
year illness. Beloved son of Joe and Janine Richard, he was grandson of Meredith Adams
(Garry), predeceased by grandparents, David Adams, Lois Smith, and Theresa Richard.
He was the loved nephew of Emily Adams (Ron), Tom Richard, Jim Richard (Donna) and
Terry Richard (Lisa). Mark will be missed by many cousins and deeply missed by his
best friend, Al Cameron, and by his “second Mum”, Karen Cameron. He is greatly
missed by family and friends, and the many who knew him.
Mark was born in Orillia, Ontario, and lived his entire life in Gravenhurst, Ontario, and
so was well known by many in our small town. In recent years, when short bowel
syndrome rendered him no longer able to eat orally, Mark discovered how much he
enjoyed cooking, and it was his great pleasure to treat his family to several special meals
created with love in his kitchen. He always liked watching the cooking shows on TV,
particularly Gord Ramsey.
Mark also had a life long appreciation for a variety of music genres, with a particular love
of metal music, heavy rock, as well as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and a number of
other groups. When he was no longer able to work, he began to volunteer at Curries
Music store, helping with the record section. He very much liked vinyl records.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the many health care teams and
workers involved in Mark’s very complex medical condition, both at Toronto General
Hospital and here in Muskoka. We extend a special thank you to Dr. Biagio Iannantuono,
surgeon extraordinaire, always caringly and quietly in the back ground even when not
actively involved with Mark. We also thank Dr. Kim Forrester, who on so many occasions
went above and beyond the call of duty to care for and advocate on behalf of Mark. And
we also extend a loving hug to Mark’s very special in home nurse, Joanne Tingey, and her
team of nurses who came to know Mark so well. Joanne, as head of his in home nursing
team, was always so kind and attentive towards him, and she became like a “third
Mum”!!
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date, hopefully in
May or June, and will be announced when those details are known. Donations to the
charity of your choice on Mark’s behalf will be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
