Obituary of Nora Engebretson
Nora was born in 1937 in Edmonton, Alberta, and was chosen by George & Helen Payne of High Prairie, Alberta. She was raised on a farm in the High Prairie area. She met her future husband, Maurice, at a horse race track in Kinuso when she was nine years old and he was 12 years old. They were married in on October 30, 1953 in Canyon Creek and started their married life there before moving to Spirit River in 1957. Nora and Maurice were married 66 years.
Nora’s lifelong interest in horses began at an early age. She become a jockey and rode thoroughbreds at small race tracks throughout Alberta. Her final race was the Grande Prairie 2-year-old Futurity, which she won at the age of 42. She was known as a fearlessly competitive jockey.
Our mom was a hard worker. There was no task she could not accomplish or repair job she could not get done. She had a deep love for flower gardening and pets, which always included a horse.
Nora leaves behind her husband Maurice, her children Ben (Ron), Arthur, Coleman, Colleen (Ken), Darcy (Corinne), and Brenda (Ivor); 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Nora will be missed greatly by her family.
