Mary Patricia Smith (Burns)
Smith, Mary (nee Burns) – Passed away peacefully, at the Welland Hospital on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the age of 85. Beloved wife for 52 years of the late Derwyn Smith (2011). Cherished mother of Bruce Smith (Penny) and Paul Smith. Proud grandmother of Hannah, Olivia, Emma, Calisha and Ella. She was a cheerleader for all her grandchildren at their sports and academic events. Mary worked as an R.N. in Sarnia and also for the Lambton Health Unit with a main focus on indigenous people. In her later years she returned to Western University to graduate with her B.A. She later volunteered at the Blue Water Health Care in Sarnia where she received the Mayor’s Award for her volunteer efforts. Mary was very involved with running of the Breakfast Club at Ross School. She received the DSBN Directors Recognition for her extraordinary contributions. In what spare time Mary had, she enjoyed knitting and needlepoint. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Season’s, Lookout Ridge and Third Floor Welland Hospital for all their care and compassion. The family will receive friends at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Friday, April 5th from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm. A service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held in the Cudney Chapel on Saturday, April 6th at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. As an expression sympathy donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or Niagara Nutrition Partners (which deals with nutrition programs at schools including Ross School) would be appreciated.
