Obituary for
Lionel Joseph Poirier
Lionel Joseph Poirier passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 6th, surrounded by his loved ones. He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Maureen Brown Poirier. He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Ellis (her children, Ernie Matt and Tamara Robertson), and his 5 children, Suzanne Poirier, Jo-Anne Poirier (Dave Darch), Michelle Poirier-Patry (Jean-Philippe Patry), Gabriel Poirier (Nancy Poirier) and Francois Poirier (Diana Poirier) and his 8 grandchildren, Maxime Côté (Dominic Côté), Alexandre Poirier (Clare Yang), Mathieu Poirier (Ashley Poirier), Philippe Patry (Janelle Patry), Connor Davidson, Adam Davidson (Kelsey Goodwin), Zachary Poirier and Christian Poirier. He is also survived by 2 great grandchildren Noémie and Mikel Patry. Lionel had an illustrious career in education beginning his journey as a teacher and finishing it as a senior executive in the provincial government, after many years at Algonquin College as the Dean of Applied Arts. After he was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), he became a resident at St-Patrick’s Home in Ottawa. There he made many friends and spent 3 years on the Residents’ Council and singing in the choir. He will be missed as everyone will remember the friendly, optimistic resident who remembered everyone’s name and made everyone feel special. When asked how he was, he would always answer “I’m doing great because I live at St-Patrick’s Home.” His family will remember him as a kind, gentle man who provided wise counsel and who had a perpetually sunny disposition. Lionel was the best Father/Grandfather. His love for his family was unlimited as he supported and counselled them individually and as a unit; ending every call and visit with “je t’aime or je vous aime”. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Saturday, May 11th from 2 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to St-Patrick’s Home or to PSP Research would be greatly appreciated.
