With great sadness, the family of Lillian Frances (Hayes) Black announce her passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on April 28, 2019. She was surrounded by family and had recently celebrated her ninety-third birthday.
Born on Easter Sunday, April 04, 1926, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter for the late John Harold Hayes and the late Mary (McLean) Hayes, and a sister for the late Viola Hayes, who died as an infant, and the late Ivy Scott (Charles).
Widow of the late Ralph Milton Black, Lillian spent the 1960s moving between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with her husband as Ralph advanced his career with the federal government’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans. They permanently settled in Saint John in 1967 where they continued raising their ten children.
Lillian was predeceased by her first child and eldest son, Ralph John, in 2013, and by her daughter, Cynthia Marino, in 1995. She always took great pride in her children’s accomplishments, including Ralph John having driven over a million miles accident-free before his retirement as a motor coach operator, and Cynthia’s clean air activism, which helped change provincial law.
She is survived by five sons: Carl (Lorraine) of Fredericton; Reginald (Heather Wood) of Vancouver; Weldon (Joanne) of Quispamsis; and, Rick and Montgomery of Saint John. She is also survived by three daughters: Victoria Lowe (David) and Kimberley of Saint John, and Kendra (David Johnston) of Rothesay.
Surviving grandsons are Jason (Kristy Greene) and Christopher Lowe, Andrew Black, and Ryan Black, all of Saint John; granddaughters Julie Worden (Aaron) and Angela Waugh (Jake) of Fredericton, Christie Marino (Dan Edison), Lori Foley (Jay), Jennifer Phillips, Allison Black, and Emma Black, all of Saint John; Renee Black of Morinville, Alberta; and, Danika Smit (Jeroen Kerstens) of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Great-grandsons are Samuel Worden, and Zachary and Thomas Waugh, of Fredericton; Joshua Brien, Emmett and Camden Foley, Keenan Lowe, and Tyson Phillips of Saint John; and, one great-granddaughter, Jacqueline Brien (Kaleb Henderson) of Saint John.
Lillian volunteered for over forty years with 527 Simonds Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets, and was a civilian escort for many memorable citizenship trips to military bases in Canada and the United States. She was a member of the Parents Sponsoring Committee, then given the position of squadron secretary, then fulfilled the role of squadron treasurer for twenty-five years. She was gratefully acknowledged with a Certificate of Honour by the president and directors of the Air Cadet League of Canada for outstanding services to the cadets, in addition to receiving the Air Cadet League of Canada Volunteer Long Service Medal.
