Nécrologie
For over one hundred and two years, Les Bowley lived life to the full and did it his way. Farmer, soldier, chef, manager, missionary and pastor, his favourite calling was that of “Gramps”.
A farm boy who left school after Grade Eight to support the family in Depression years, he caught up on his education with a Bachelors and a Masters in Theology, as well as courses in food and management. An insatiable reader and encyclopedic historian, he read and argued the finer points well past his hundredth year.
Married since 1945 to his darling Hilda (née Thornton) who survives him at a mere ninety-nine, he also leaves his loving son Norman and cherished daughter-in-law Karen, his treasured grandchildren Trinden Bowley (Lisa), Chrissy Gagnon (Julien), Cass Adams (Justin) and Meghan Gagnon (Claude). For Gramps, the ultimate thrill was the arrival of great-grandchildren Jasmine, Rylee, Sienna, David, Mallory and Lincoln.
A resident of “The Perley” since 2014, he maintained his independent spirit to the last and formed special friendships with doctors, staff and nurses. The family is so grateful for the love and affectionate care he received at their hands.
Les Bowley made innumerable friends during his life but outlived most of them. Those still around, together with family, are welcome to attend a simple celebration of his life, to be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Lupton Hall, at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, 1750 Russell Road, Ottawa. A reception will follow.
No flowers– he loved to grow his own– but if you like, send a few dollars to a worthy cause. He’d like that.
