Obituary of Joseph Thomas ‘Joe’ Ratchford, New Waterford
We regret to inform friends and neighbours of the passing of our father, Joseph Thomas ‘Joe’ Ratchford, after a brief illness at the age of 87. Sadly, we said goodbye on April 23 to a wonderful husband and father of four children.
Born in Low Point, he was a son of the late Blake and Catherine (Rose) Ratchford.
Da worked in the coal mine in his early years before he spent many years at the Heavy Water Plant in Glace Bay to provide for his family. He was well respected in the construction industry for his work ethic and skills where he made many friends creating lifetime friendships.
After his retirement, he continued to make new friendships and very much enjoyed his days with his coffee buddies sharing stories and laughter. He also enjoyed meeting up with his good buddy, Mike Campbell, every Sunday.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Nora (Venzon); daughter, Susan (Fabian); sons, Kevin (Marlene), Sheldon (Nadine); daughter-in-law, Carol; grandchildren, Tiffany, Matthew, Steven, Nathan and Josh; great-grandchildren, Ophelia, Lawson and Caleb.
Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his sister, Nancy and his beloved son, Blake, who he missed dearly.
Cremation has taken place. A private funeral service will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will follow in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
