Jennie Elizabeth McInnes MacDonald 1933 2019

Obituary for
Jennie Elizabeth McInnes (MacDonald)
McInnes, Jennie Elizabeth (MacDonald), 86 – Truro. Our Mom was a role model for each of us. She taught us to be strong, gracious, giving and kind. She did not tolerate gossip or “foolish talk”. Mom was quick to correct us, but just as quick to encourage. Educated as a school teacher, Mom taught at Dawson School before marrying Dad and beginning their life in Lyon’s Brook, Pictou County. Working with people was something she enjoyed and Mom especially loved the time she spent developing skills in young people through church, SIGMA-C and 4H. She served in many organizations and was a life member of the Women’s Institutes of Nova Scotia. She was a tireless volunteer, serving many roles including County Councillor and Chairman of the Board for Valley View Villa. In 1993, she received the Order of Canada for her work as a volunteer and in 2012, she received the Diamond Jubilee Medal for her significant contributions to community. Mom often talked of her time in Connecticut before her marriage and her many trips with the Federated Women’s Institute of Canada with whom she served as President. Mom’s life was full and she lived it well. When she took on a task, she gave it her all. After she moved to Truro, Mom embraced her new life, made many new friends, further developed her sewing skills and joined the local IODE where she served as President. She spent many hours golfing, first with Dad and then with us, right up until last September. The past few years, Mom slipped away little by little, but every once in a while, she would give us a glimpse of the Mom we knew and so loved. She still called each of us by name and we are grateful for the extra years we were given with her. To the very end, Mom kept her well-honed social graces. She passed away peacefully in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. Mom had a deep faith and we are comforted knowing she is healthy again. She is survived by her four daughters, Lynn (Jim) MacLean, Lyon’s Brook, Teri (Chris) Giannou, Halifax, Carol (Greg) Jones and Karen (Robert) Baillie, Truro; her ten grandchildren, Jeff (Itzel) Giannou, Michael Giannou, Mila MacLean, Jessica (Justin) Landry, Kelsey (Zachary) Withrow, Kristi (Sergio) Garrido, Courtney and Abbey Jones, Logan and Duncan Baillie, as well as seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Doris Jones, Connie Morrison, Herbie (Muriel) MacDonald and Vincent (Joan) Heighton; her brother-in-law, Robert McInnes, Cleveland, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her former husband, Donald McInnes, as well as her sister, Elsie Ferguson. A special thank you to Charlene, Maureen, Karen F., Joanne and Susan – Mom’s caregivers over the past several months. Your kindness to Mom made this journey easier for all of us. A visitation will be held on Friday, May 3rd from 2 – 4 p.m. and from 6 – 8 p.m. with a Memorial Service being held on Saturday, May 4th at 11a.m. both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Donations in Mom’s memory, may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, North River or Lyon’s Brook United Churches or the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation. Family flowers only.
