James Simm Sunday April 7th 2019

James (Jim) Simm
January 11/1933 – April 7/2019
“A St. James Boy”
Jim was able to have his final days just the way he wanted – surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his wife Moira (2003), parents Norman and Katherine, son-in-law Carey, grandson Samuel, and sisters-in-law’s Barbara and Val.
He will be missed by sons Jim (Heather), Norman (Monique), Ted (Amber), and daughters Donna, Vicki. Jim was very close to his grandchildren Aaron, Colin, Holly, Jesse, George, Ava and Henry. He also leaves to mourn his brothers Bill and Keith (Gayle), along with numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was blessed to find companionship with his dear friend Joyce (2019) during the last number of years.
Jim grew up in St. James and started working in his youth. He sold newspapers, made deliveries for a St. James drug store, and unsurprisingly became a caddy at St. Charles Golf Course. He attended St. James Collegiate where he won many awards for track, and for a time held the title of “fastest sprinter” in St. James. Not long after graduating he began working at CPR, and part-time at Assiniboia Downs in the 60’s.
Jim married Moira in 1956, and to quote Jim “it was the best thing that happened to him”.
Jim was never one to sit at home. He became a member of St. James Legion #4 in 1954 and was given a “Lifetime Members” card in 2009. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans’ English Billiards League for over 60 years and accumulated a record 14 Jack Sparrow Memorial Shields. Jim enjoyed playing cribbage at the legion, partnering up with Moira or his brother Keith through the years. He also spent many days volunteering for the legion by working at meat draws and participating in the poppy campaign.
Jim received recognition from Canadian Blood Services for making over 100 donations. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of Capital Lodge 136 AF & AM. He was a Shriner, a member of Khartum Temple/ Oriental Band, where Jim was Past President and the Sultan of the Scimitar. He always looked forward to leading the Oriental band into the Winnipeg Arena, opening for the Shrine Circus.
As an adult, you never found Jim at home on Sundays once the snow was gone. He golfed regularly at Windsor Park Golf Course and accumulated 3 holes-in-one through the years (even though one of the holes-in-one’s was only witnessed by people with the last name of “Simm”).
The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre for the wonderful care they provided Dad during the last few months.
Join us in “raising a glass to Jim “on Sunday, May 5th, from 1 pm – 4 pm, at St. James Legion #4 (1755 Portage Avenue). Doors to open @ 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, and Diabetes Canada.
You’ll always remain in our hearts
