Ernie was predeceased by Tung Ping Pon, his loving wife on January 17, 2018. Born in Guangdong, China, he is survived by his 4 children, daughters, Lucy (Angelo Zia), Wendy (Vance Hatt), sons Gorman and Burton (Leila). He is greatly loved by his 6 grandchildren, Kelly Zia (Karen), Christina Loh (Eldon), Nicole Lawson (Chris Morris), Scott Lawson, Megan and Amy Pon. He is blessed with 5 great grandchildren Elliot, Madeleine, Henry, Jayden, and Sophie.
Ernie immigrated to Violet Grove, Alberta in 1951 where he began work in food preparation. In 1958 Tung Ping joined him in Edmonton from China and together they operated several restaurants until their retirement in 1986. Dad was a very talented and gifted musician and play violin for over 50 years. Later he received an erhu, a Chinese Opera violin as a birthday gift to which he could immediately play. He could and would follow any Chinese Opera playing at the time, note for note with perfect pitch and tone. The most amazing part in all of this? He couldn’t read a single note of music at all! In 2005, he travelled back to Guangdong for the first time since immigrating to Canada to visit his childhood home and then to Australia to visit with friends and relatives. Dad loved his food, and really enjoyed himself when it came to meals. Dad appreciated a good story and loved to laugh.
He will be remembered for his values of hard work, his passion for music and his love of food.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Ernest Pon of Edmonton
