RUSSELL, Donald Owen – Mr. Donald Owen Russell at the Cornwall Community Hospital on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Beloved husband of Isabel Russell (McLeod). Loved father of Bruce Russell of Toronto and Jane Russell (Tom Kann) of Moorestown, New Jersey. Sadly missed by granddaughter Kiera Russell-Kann. Predeceased by his parents Harold and Della (Millar) Russell, his sister Dorothy Patterson and brother Lee Russell. Fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Barbara (Gibson) Russell and his nephews Robert Russell, Richard Russell, Kirk Patterson, and niece Lisa Patterson.
Don’s earliest work was in sports journalism with the Cornwall Standard Freeholder and then he transitioned into a long, successful career in education working for the Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Board of Education. He also worked many summers with the City of Cornwall’s Parks and Recreation Department. After retiring, Don revisited writing through a weekly historical sports column called ‘One More Time’. Throughout his working career and retirement, he was involved in the community as an active member and Past President of the Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Historical Society and a Mason in Corinthian Lodge #669. Last but not least, he was an avid and passionate sports fan.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Resting at the Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall where visitation will be held Sunday April 29, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM and then to St. John’s Presbyterian Church on Monday from 10:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM. If so desired, contributions in his memory to St. John’s Presbyterian Church Heritage Fund or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
