Marnie Sproule of Edmonton

Marnie Sproule passed away peacefully on April 13th, 2019, at the age of 91. She was predeceased 2 years earlier by husband, Brian; and is survived by her sister, Barbara (Ossie) and brother, Jack (Betty); four children, Tim, Shannon, John (Coralie), and Erin (Dave), as well as seven grandchildren, Scott, Erin, Brian, Liam, Sara, Connor, and Jack.
Born in Waterhole, Alberta, in 1928, Marnie grew up in Fairview, Alberta, a ‘farm girl’ at heart remaining so proud of the community she came from. She attended the University of Alberta in Nursing, graduating in 1951 and then returned 30 years later to complete an Arts Degree in Art History. She practiced only a short time as a nurse but at a pivotal time – acting as the charge nurse on the polio ward during the Alberta polio epidemic. She married Dr. Brian Sproule in 1955 and they both went to Texas for an exciting and impactful period of time, including being the place where their four children were born.
On their return to Edmonton, she devoted her time and talents to raising her family, and creating a welcoming and loving home to both direct and extended family. While supporting her family, friends and community she also became an accomplished and active potter. She was a lover of gardens, books, art, photography and walking. Those walks were either around the neighborhood, or through mountain passes with a network of friends (the ‘hiking group’) or family. She devoted much of her energies to doing anything she could – that would support her children’s passions, their lives and the lives of people they cared about. Humble and humbling, loving and loved, possessing tremendous grace, tremendous strength …. magnificent.
The entire Sproule family would like to thank Dr. Fraser Armstrong and his resident Dr. Kenton Nicholson along with the staff on 5 East at the Misericordia Hospital for their professional and compassionate care to her and the family.
A Celebration of her Life will occur at 2:00 p.m. on June 7, 2019 at the Unitarian Church, 10804 – 119 Street NW, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers the family would ask people to contribute to their community through a charity they feel passionate about.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Marnie Sproule of Edmonton..
