1927-2019
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Margaret Katherine
Astika announces her passing on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 in the Valley
Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on June 2, 1927 in
Starr’s Point, she was a daughter of the late Harold and
Clarabelle (Wood) Hartling. Margaret began her working career at Sears
in Halifax and later was employed with the Students Union at the
University of Alberta. In retirement, she returned to her beloved Nova
Scotia and settled in New Minas and began volunteer work at Valley
Regional Hospital. Margaret loved animals, especially cats and dogs.
She enjoyed playing crib, backgammon and was an avid bingo player. In
2017, she moved to the Wolfville Elms and became part of the fabric of
the Elms community. She is survived by sons, Garfield (Sheila)
Langille, White Rock; Marshall (Debbie) Astika, Calgary, Alberta;
Vaughn Astika and Dale (Karen) Astika, both of Edmonton, Alberta;
daughters, Judy (Gerald) Langille-Caswell, Ontario and Tanya Astika
(Tom Ullyett), Whitehorse, Yukon; sister, Flora Hamer, Dartmouth; 14
grandchildren, Jeffrey, Brian, Bruce and Matthew Langille, Lynnette
Levy, Kenny Madill, John Astika, Angie Astika-Kew, David and Jared
Astika, Emma and Coralee Ullyett, Samantha Astika and Bruce Radau; 16
great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased
by her husband, Henry “Hank” Astika; son, Eric
“Sam” Astika; grandson, Wayne Levy; sister, Pearl
Cranley and brother, Alfred Hartling. Cremation has taken
place. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral
service, followed by reception, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday,
April 8, 2019 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend
Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff
of the Wolfville Elms and the Valley Regional Hospital, Emergency
Department for the care, kindness and compassion given to Margaret and
her family. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may
be made to Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, White Rock Baptist
Church or to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been
entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
