Zenon Diakow 2019

Zenon Diakow
April 12, 1935 – March 9, 2019

Zenon Diakow of Yorkton and formerly of Canora, SK, passed away at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home on March 9, 2019, at the age of 83 years.
Zenon was born on April 12, 1935, in Buchanan, SK, to Michael and Aksenia (Kuzik) Diakow. He attended Olesha School until he moved to Canora, SK with his parents. He then attended Canora School until 1954 before furthering his education at St. Joseph’s College in Yorkton, SK. Upon the completion of his education, Zenon entered the Redemptorist Monastery to become a Brother. He remained in Yorkton for the next three years before accepting a transfer to St. Joseph’s Monastery in Winnipeg, MB. After a year in Winnipeg, Zenon left the monastic life and decided to pursue employment in various industries within the city. He worked in a Baking Powder factory and oversaw the mixing of the baking powder. He told of how each time he went up town he would encounter women who would blame him for their cakes not rising properly. In time, Zenon became an entrepreneur and built and operated his own Miniature Golf Course in Portage la Prairie, MB. At the same time, he accepted a position as the manager of the A & W Drive In. After two and a half years, Zenon relocated to Brandon, MB, where he worked for Perth’s Dry Cleaners. After a few years in Brandon, Zenon decided on a new career path and returned to Saskatchewan. He attended the Saskatchewan Technical Institute in Saskatoon, SK, and studied Barbering. Upon his completion of the course, he barbered in Langenburg, Esterhazy and Dauphin. He then purchased his own Barber Shop and Musical Supply Store in Kamsack, SK. After four years, Zenon converted the shop to a Cafe, which he operated for the next year and a half. Not long after, he sold the Cafe and moved to Hudson Bay, SK, where he operated another Barber Shop and Musical Supply Store for about three years.
In 1973, his father, Michael, passed away, so Zenon made the move back to Canora to help care for his mother, until her passing in 1984. During that time, Zenon purchased the Laundromat, which he operated for over fifteen years.
Over the years, Zenon was an active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church and dedicated his time in many positions acting as caretaker, elder and as a cantor. Additionally, he took his turn in various capacities within the executive and was actively involved until his retirement in 2000. Zenon remained in Canora until August 2017, when he relocated to Aspen Bluffs Villa in Yorkton, SK, then to Langenburg, SK, in July 2018. In September 2019, he became a resident of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home, where he resided until his passing on March 9, 2019.
