Darrell was predeceased by his parents, Morley and Mildred Drummond; his brother, Dale; and his spouse, Darrin. Darrin and Darrell were together for 12 years and married for 7 of those. Darrell is survived by his former spouse, Linda; his children, Alex (Sharla) and Melissa (Dustin) of Lethbridge, AB; granddaughter, Mila; brothers, Doug (Susan) of Lake Cowichan, David Helm (Jean) of Cranbrook; sister-in-law Diana (Shane); brother-in-law, Darrell (Muriel) of Rainbow Lake, AB; and father-in-law, Frank of Fort Smith, NWT.
Darrell studied at the Pacific Marine Institute and had a long and fulfilling career with BC Ferries for 35 years, working his way up to the rank of Chief Officer. He retired at the age of 54 and bought a home in Parksville where he lived the remainder of his life, enjoying retirement with his spouse, Darrin and their dog, Valen. Darrell and Darrin would often spend their winters in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where they had a close community of friends.
Darrell was an accomplished swimmer and swam competitively with the Masters Swim Club in both Nanaimo and Victoria, BC. He also enjoyed sailing, spending sunny days at the Nanaimo River, Tai Chi, reading, camping and cooking. He had a very dry sense of humour and would often catch his friends and family off-guard with amusement. Darrell was so loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We are forever grateful for the memories and life he has given us and find comfort in knowing he has found peace.
A Celebration of Darrell’s Life will take place at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 29th, 2019 at Yates Memorial Services, 1000 Allsbrook Road, Parksville. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services, www.bcmhf.ca/donate.
