Obituary of Werner Bergen
Bergen, Werner – Passed away peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Friday, March 15, 2019, in his 67th year, with family at his side, after a brief stay in hospital. Beloved brother of Eleanor Ruth (Calgary) and Evelyn (St.Catharines). Predeceased by his parents, Helen (Braun) and Ben Bergen and brother-in-law Jim Franks. Dear friend of Nancy Fox. Survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Werner was a dedicated journalist, working as a reporter, photographer and editor at a number of newspapers in Ontario and St. John’s, NL and Prince Albert, SK. He enjoyed his stint at the Peterborough Examiner, particularly the role of Entertainment Editor. Travelling the highways and byways across Canada was a thrill for Werner. A rock hound, collecting rocks and attending the Bancroft Gemboree was an annual outing and another opportunity for a drive.
Werner was a founding member of the Kawartha Jazz Society and he thoroughly enjoyed the music and meeting so many of the top jazz musicians of North America. Fishing and camping, often in Algonquin, with the Friesens, was a highlight every year. In retirement, he found a new passion in music, joining New Horizons and learning to play baritone saxophone.
As per Werner’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Private interment. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in both Peterborough and Niagara. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, memorial donations to a charity of your choice or the Heart & Stroke Foundation (heartandstroke.ca) or Diabetes Canada (diabetes.ca) would be appreciated.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Werner
